AbstractThe life cycle of the aquatic macrophytes influences that of several species, some of which feed on these plants and others that use them for shelter, but also influences large-scale global cycles such as that of the contribution of the floodplain to the carbon balance. We studied them as part of the habitat of the Amazonian manatee Trichechus inunguis. In particular, we studied the life cycle of the plants and the spatial distribution of the stands by means of a historical series of Landsat TM and ETM+ images and fieldwork. The study was carried out in the region of the Mamirauá and Amanã sustainable development reserves. Macrophyte stands tend to occur in the same places every year and not much variation in this pattern was found throughout the eleven years that the images spanned. However, in smaller scales of observation it was noted that plant growth is intimately related to similar smaller-scale variations in the floodpulse timing. This probably has implications for the movements of the Amazonian manatee, but also to other organisms and levels of organization.
